JEFF GATES

Jeff - Gates

SILVER SPRING, MARYLAND - USA

Jeff Gates is an artist and writer, interested in the
intersection of art and American culture. He is the founder of the Chamomile Tea Party. Since 2010, he’s created over 200 posters on the acrimonious state of American political discourse. Public engagement is an important aspect of Gates’ work. Just before the 2012 US presidential election, he was the first artist to buy ad space in Washington, DC’s subway system, placing his posters about the effects of legislative partisanship on platform signs.

In 2018, Google Arts & Culture published a six-part online exhibition of this work allowing Gates to create a visual history of American politics from the rise of the reactionary right to the election of Donald Trump. He is presently working on posters dealing with the intersection of the pandemic and the 2020 US presidential election.
